My start in photography was almost accidental. In 1991, my dad bought me a Pentax K1000 while he was back in school for his master’s degree, thinking I’d enjoy it. His interest faded. Mine didn’t.
By college, I’d drifted and needed a reset. I enrolled at Northern Oklahoma College in Tonkawa, intending to stay a semester or two just to get my grades back up. A photography class that first semester changed the plan entirely. I finished my AAS in Photography there two and a half years later.
After a few years working and figuring out next steps, I went on to the University of Central Oklahoma, earning a Bachelor’s in Photojournalism with a minor in history.
Some of my favorite work came from assignments for Oklahoma Today, closing at the end of this year after decades covering the state. Any time I got to document life in rural Oklahoma, I was happy. That’s the work I keep coming back to, whether the client is a publication or a business: telling the story of people and the work they do.
I build relationships with the people I photograph and meet them where they are. That matters more here than anywhere else I could work. I was born and raised in Stillwater, came to Edmond in 2003 for college, and never left. Oklahoma isn’t just where I shoot. It’s where my family is from.
